While I think it is great that we are having the debate about Fluoride as it is definitely not the panacea that the health funds hope it will be, a little bit of science behind the discussion would be very helpful. In the Cairns Post on the 16th December 2008, the article titled “Councillors fighting plans for Fluoride” sources a sample space of ONE to prove the point that Fluoride doesn’t work.
Cr Linda Cooper apparently grew up in WA where the water is Fluoridated and she has a moutful of fillings. Wow, I grew up in WA too and I also have a moutful of fillings!!! That’s two people – it must be true, Fluoride actually causes fillings (or maybe it is living in WA that does). A little bit of rigour to the argument and a little less anecdotal evidence would go a long way thanks guys.
This article is both wrong and typically for the Cairns Post another example of lazy journalism.
Through my involvement with a local community group I have gotten to know Steve Wettenhall over the past two years he has been Member for Barron River.
I was present at his end of year office party (as were about 90 others, many of them representatives from community groups) where he explained he is taking his children and wife overseas to visit his brother who lives in New York (his brother is a musician who plays in Woody Allen’s band). He explained he would be away from 5 December until 9 January but that he would be contactable during that time in case of any emergency.

Years of focused attack by the Cairns Post on the location of the existing hospital… you would think that on the verge of construction they would have let it go and accept that the Esplanade is where the hospital is staying. But no… Margo Zlotkowski has published an exclusive! (Ummm yes, of course it is an exclusive because nobody else finds this stuff even remotely interesting – let alone another newspaper).

The idea of the polls and vox-pops is to give some level of feedback on the mood and opinion of the general public. While the subject matter is often up for debate – what happens when some sloppy editing results in a VERY mixed message?
See if you can spot what is wrong with this image from Saturday’s Cairns Post.

Cairns Post front page 28th November
On November the 27th, near Cardwell, a semi-trailer driver drove through level crossing lights in front of a tilt train and killed the two train drivers. All the media loves a train crash and the Cairns Post is no exception. The Cairns Tilt train level crossing incident was a boon for the Cairns Post – it had a fatal “train accident” on its turf. Not the Cairns Post was amazed by the mis-reporting and conjecture that the Post got up to during its “train crash” tirade.

I have a “No Junk Mail” sticker on my letterbox for a reason…that’s because I do not want glossy brochures that were once trees trying to sell me things I will never, ever buy. Maybe the stickers are working, because now that Cairns Post thinks it might be a good idea to serve up glossy junk mail with their news. Stop it, we don’t want it, we don’t need it and we won’t buy it.

Rustys Markets
I am glad to say that it looks like our Rusty’s is going to stay put – at least until some other headline grabber makes a song and dance. For those not familiar with the recent saga, Cr Alan Blake recently showed exactly how out-of-touch he is with the local community by suggesting that the market would be better off if it moved to Trinity Wharf.
Apparently this was for the benefit of both the market (stall holders) and the community (shoppers), as there is a proposal for a new building on the current site.
While we have come to expect such obvious pandering to the developers from Cr Blake – this week’s Cairns Post saw our own serial column misogynist Gavin King write another useless tirade. Whilst Gavin is entitled to his own viewpoint, the way he attacks nearly everyone involved is quite startling.

Couldn't organise a?
We here at Not the Cairns Post love a good “end of year” party as much as the next person. Staff of a one of Cairns’ largest tourism organisations love a good party too. Unfortunately, it was found to be a little too difficult to organise the party at the venue they would have liked and decided to hold the Christmas drinks at their depot instead. The original venue? Blue Sky Brewery…
